Music at St Mary's Church

 Music

Director of Music: Mrs. Lyudmila Grimes

Asst. Organist: Mrs. Pauline Nicholls

Music plays a very important part in the worship of St. Mary’s Church.  We are affiliated to The Royal School of Church Music.

Services: The main Sunday commitment is The Parish Eucharist, currently at 10am and using Common Worship Order 1, and Evensong (Book of Common Prayer) at 6.30pm. In addition there are two Baptism services each month, usually attracting large congregations (1st Sunday at 3pm and 3rd Sunday at 11.15am). Two hymn books are currently in use: 'Hymns Old & New' and 'Ancient & Modern New Standard'. CCL and Calamus copyright Licences permit the occasional use of other material.
The annual service of  Nine Lessons & Carols, an Advent Carol Service, Remembrance Sunday and the Christingle Service are examples of other  opportunities for significant musical input.

The Organ: It is 2 manual, built by Lewis & Co. of Brixton, London, erected in 1879. It is regularly maintained by Hele & Co. of Saltash. The pedal board and swell organ have electronic action and the Great Organ has tracker action.

The Choir: There is a robed choir that is numerically strong – up to 20 members  (SATB), all adults with the exception of one junior member. The strongest element of the choir’s repertoire is traditional, largely 19th century church music.  They are a committed group and sing both at The Parish Eucharist and Evensong each Sunday. They practice on Friday evenings.

There are on average 24-30 weddings a year and about 60 church funerals.

The Vision: This is a large church, with great potential. The congregation includes some instrumentalists who have played occasionally during services. The Vicar would like to encourage this, especially when the Parish Eucharist is an All- age occasion (usually once a month). The inclusion of younger people in the musical life of the church is another area for development and potential growth. A successful Music Workshop was organised for schools by the previous Director of Music.
